Explanation To Books Thirteen is Too Young to Die
This was very morbid - and is it just me, or was there a strange subgenre of death books back in the 1980's-1990's? I discovered others, including Is My Sister Dying?, and they all seem to follow the same pattern of drama and upset.Thirteen is Too Young to Die is predictable enough: a typical teen with the usual problems of acne, secret crushes and school drama, suddenly has her life thrown into chaos after being diagnosed with lupus. That's not bad in and of itself, but it's worth noting that at the time this book was written, what we knew about lupus was different compared to today. When I was a little kid, lupus was this hushed secret among parents and teachers right up there with autism and cancer - that which isn't well understood often becomes taboo or at least kept out of everyday conversations. This book is set in the 1980's and after her diagnosis, our main character suddenly becomes an invalid who can't do anything and seems destined to go any day now. This is a pretty dated concept; lupus info is readily mainstream these days and not only that, but there are many more treatment options for it now than there used to be. This does make the book interesting to look at how rapidly things have progressed, but I think it's no longer as effective a story as it used to be. Alexa's not particularly easy to relate to either; she's so average that it's unreal at best. We learn a lot about her illness, but not a lot about her as a human being.

I thought that Thirteen Is Too Young To Die was just heroic. I thought it was heroic because it talks about a girl who has a disease which is Lupus and it means Wolf. It also talks about the struggles of her life. But the only thing that wasn't interesting that it barely mentions God. But other than that I like it a lot.

I read this book when I was a kid and then re-read it recently. I was surprised how emotional I still felt. It is still a good story and definitely a nice nostalgic read (no cell phones!).
This is the best book ever!It really teaches you that you should enjoy life because you never know when it will end.
Read this book probably 20+ years ago, and I remember liking it so much. I think it was my first read about illness, dying, and inevitably death. It had a profound effect on me, and I still remember it today.
My favorite tern book. I located a beat up copy and ordered it for my fifth grade daughter. She finished it in 3 days and made a poster for school that this is her favorite book. She reads a lot! Now, she wants a better copy and friends and her teacher want it. How can I get it? This book is on its second generation of being a preteen favorite! I need a good copy for her birthday next month.
