Commentary To Books In the Dark of the Night
The rambling lakeside house called Pinecrest has lain empty since its last owner went missing seven years ago. But for the Brewster family it will be this year's holiday retreat, and for the kids Eric and Marci it's the perfect place to spend a lazy summer exploring.Which is how Eric and his teenage friends discover a curious collection of discarded objects stowed in a hidden room in the carriage house. The bladeless hacksaws, shade-less lamps, tables with missing legs, a headless axe handle - these unremarkable items add up to a pile of junk. Yet someone once took the trouble to list each worthless relic in a cryptic ledger, thus provoking a great mystery that is now whispering, coaxing, demanding to be solved. The more the boys devote themselves to piecing together the puzzle, the more their fascination deepens into obsession. Soon their days are consumed with this weird collection, while their nights become plagued by ever more ghastly nightmares.
And finally when a horrifying discovery surfaces, so does the chilling truth about a twisted legacy with a malevolent life of its own.

I used to be a John Saul fan. Not so much anymore. I guess there is some suspension of belief with supernatural horror, but this one was way outside what I would call reasonable. Knowing that the "supernatural" influence was based on real life killers (and an accused and never proven guilty one) and their spirits or whatever infused into the objects that they used as part of their crimes... I'm sorry- that's a load of it, no matter how you cut the crap cake. And how stupid are these boys to haveThis was a pretty creepy read!Vacation has arrived for the Brewster family and they have decided to stay in the sprawling Pinecrest mansion for the summer. The previous owner of Pinecrest, Dr. Darby, disappeared seven years before. Once they get settled into the house, the son, Eric decides to go exploring the out buildings on the property which includes a carriage house. The carriage house holds quite a bit of interesting artifacts within its walls so Eric gets his friends involved in checking
I enjoyed reading this book and until this day during fourth of July fireworks, i still look over my shoulder.

Three families rent summer homes, the mother of one a worrier. She sees danger everywhere, so being away from home for months is hard on her. The families each have a teenage son, friends since childhood. They are "good" boys (if we ignore their summer goals of getting "laid"!) They snoop around an outbuilding, and discover that time moves in a different way there than in the outside world. What feels like 10 minutes there can be an hour or two outside. They also find strange artifacts collected
3.25-starsIN THE DARK OF THE NIGHT is neither the best nor worst John Saul book I've read, though it's closer to the latter than the former. It just wasn't a story that grabbed me. It strikes me as being pretty representative of the lower quality horror books that populated the best seller lists several years ago. This story is just for fans of that genre, in my opinion.
The Brewster family decides to have summer vacation this year at a lakeside mansion called Pinecrest. Sixteen-year-old Eric is happy because he will be able to spend time with his friends, Tad and Kent, who are vacationing at nearby houses with their parents. Soon after they arrive Eric does some exploring and finds an old carriage house on the property. He finds some strange items inside the carriage house and he eventually shows his friends. They also discover a secret room that has been
