The 'Horrible Histories' series of books are, without doubt, one of the most imaginative ways to introduce KS2 to history. The combination of easy to read text and cartoon style graphics is ideal for the younger reader, enabling the easy absorption of important historic information in a fun and entertaining way.Horrible Histories - The Blitzed Brits is an excellent summation of day to day life in London and elsewhere doing the aerial bombardment of the early years of the war, and the experiences of London during the days and nights of the V1 doodlebugs. The book's style is light hearted but thoroughly engaging and gives the reader an understanding of life from the perspective of ordinary civilians, rather than the fighting soldier on the front line. Illustrator Kate Sheppard’s art perfectly matches Terry Deary’s text making the book both enlightening and easy to follow.
The book contains a wide variety of facts and figures to aid a child’s understanding of daily life, but also a range of stories of real life experiences, including the lives of the young evacuees, the effect of rationing, the blackouts and a rather interesting section on rhymes and poetry of the time. The book includes short quizzes, memory prompts and small ‘knowledge tests’ throughout the book. All in all an excellent read.

Okay let's talk about the Horrible Histories.You may be aware of them as a TV show, which I highly, highly recommend, but you may not be aware that they are also books! Which I also recommend!It's hard to talk about the Horrible Histories specifically. They're hysterical short nonfiction books consisting of maybe 120 pages tops? Aimed at children, they set out to tell you all about the really nasty side of history, which I am always down for. They're smart and funny with great illustrations, andJust re-reading this book. It gives great accounts of life stories that would interest a student. For example, tales of how it felt to be sent out to the country to live with a new family from all the viewpoints. It also stated that thousands of kids returned to find that their families had disappeared. That is something I had never imagined happening in England. The first-hand accounts will make it come alive for someone, but most American kids don't hear about this until 10th grade, so they
Very interesting and factual book that is laid out in a way that is easy for children of a primary school age to follow. It is filled with lots of funny anecdotes and with a graphic style makes it very engaging for a young audience.
Another good book in the series.Your grandmother can tell you more.Some genuinely funny scenes.
This book talks about all the interesting things that have happened in Britain around the 2nd World War. It has different approaches to story telling to keep people entertained. It's sort of a bunch of short stories. Although they all go together. This book connects to real life. It's a non-fiction and historical fiction book. It was basically written to have people connect to those times. Also in between the stories there are little activity type things to pull the reader in. I gave this book
The British were indeed paying high cost for their victory in World War II. This book explained the horrible things that happened, although in a more hilarious way, like falling bombs, evacuees who were forced to live with mean hosts only to found out that they got nowhere to return, and also the massive blackouts.
The Blitzed Brits isn't the best Horrible Histories book, but it's still worth a read - in my mind, the Vicious Vikings and the Rotten Romans made for better reads. Still, this does give a valuable glimpse in to the dangerous world of The Second World War.Let's be honest, it's a period in British history that even I'm proud of, and I'm hardly patriotic. But the Brits made a name for themselves for stoicism and resilience, and they lived up to their reputation when they stood up to the Nazis
