Confronted with this knowledge of evil, she must begin the painful process of remembering and reconstructing a new whole self.Helping Barbara to navigate her grief and her memories are her therapist, the Psalms, and most of all, the words of Paul Celan. Paul Celan: 1920-1970, Poet. An eastern European holocaust survivor who wrote haunting poems about the darker spiritual trials of life and relationships that exhibit a compact style that fuses broken words and chopped syntax to produce a stark musicality.
This is a novel about a woman who goes to hell and back. It’s a story which affirms the resilience of the human spirit and the healing power of love and faith.

Wow, how fiction can heal fact is what I learnt from this book. Also poetry, movement, how writing is composition like musicThis is one amazing book. this is one of the few books i recommend to anyone who wants to read what i consider a perfect book... it is also one of the few books i kept after donating my enormous library of fiction and non-fiction several years ago... everything about this book is sublime... the writing is spectacular, the imagery is astounding, and the depth of the narrative is beyond belief... simply an unbelievably amazing work...
Amazing insight into mental illness and recovery. Wonderful integration of Paul Celan's poetry creates a haunting effect that intensifies the main character's experience.
This is one of my favorite books. I love it and read it again, now and then, just for the pleasure of hearing Mary Rakow's deep and genuine voice. Not a book for everyone, but brilliant.
This is a challenging book, emotionally and intellectually - but a gem for the right reader.
