In this classic work of intellectual history, Ernst Cassirer provides both a cogent synthesis & a penetrating analysis of one of history's greatest intellectual epochs: the Enlightenment. Arguing that there was a common foundation beneath the diverse strands of thought of this period, he shows how Enlightenment philosophers drew upon the ideas of preceding centuries even while radically transforming them to fit the modern world. In Cassirer's view, the Enlightenment liberated philosophy from the realm of pure thought & restored it to its true place as an active & creative force thru which knowledge of the world is achieved.

قبل از ریویونجف دریابندری مقدمه ای بسیار عالی برای کتاب نوشته درباب تاریخچۀ روشنفکری در اروپا و در انتهای این مقدمه بحثی جالب دارد درباب واژۀ فارسی "روشنفکری".متن را برای خودم اسکن کردم چون جایی روی اینترنت پیدایش نکردم. لینک دانلودش را می گذارم برای دوستانی که علاقه دارندلینک دانلودریویو١.کتاب های فیزیک دبیرستان را به یاد دارید همیشه وقتی راجع به یک پدیده صحبت می کردند (انعکاس نور تخلیۀ الکتریکی فشار هوا سقوط اجسام) تنها به توصیف آن پدیده اکتفا نمی کردند بلکه قانونی ریاضی را هم شرح می دادند کهآشنایی با سرآغاز عصر روشنگری و معرفی برجستگان این حوزه...متن سختی دارد اما با چند بار خوانش قابل فهم است.

Having become an admirer of the Enlightenment period and its thinkers during an undergraduate humanities survey course, I picked up this book (probably on the advice of a mentor-professor) to learn more. Ideally, anyone tackling Cassirer's study should already be decently acquainted with the thinkers discussed (as another review here says), a careful and inquisitive novice, which is what I was, can get a good deal of benefit from it. As I read it some four decades ago, I won't attempt now to say
Ernst Cassirer's writing is amazing. I read the Religion section and other parts. Very good analysis.
Tough read, but worth it. Cassirer really got at the heart of the enlightenment's ideas and the grand debate over the origins of knowledge.
