Okay, to be fair, the cover art is atrocious. It's accurate, but still atrocious.With that out of the way, note that Francis Sandow is a likable cuss with a tendency toward philosophical reminiscence. From the Big Tree theory of economics to the Tokyo Bay of Time, we may excuse Francis this little quirk; between cryogenic stasis and modern (read: futuristic) medicine, he's the oldest human still alive.This is a book about revenge, about love, and about the relationship between the mortal and theZelazny dealing with immortality, gods, passage of time and human nature in way only he could :)
Like so many Zelazny novels, this takes place in a very strange fantasy universe that takes a bit of time to wrap your brain around, but once you do its a great story that you cant put down.
This was a farily obscure book by Zelazny I hadn't even heard of before, but found in a used book store. I was every bit as good as everything else he wrote, hitting upon his signature themes of immortality mixed with mythology, and how the nature of man doesn't change despite these things. A very poignant book about a filthy rich man in the future who has lived over a thousand years, and suddenly gets pictures of long dead friends and lovers from his past, and he must investigate to find out
I admit, I'm not a bit sci-fi fan tending to stick more to the fantasy side of that genre and even then, I like things with dragons and wolves and elves and things like that. I don't do the darker nitty-gritty stuff since I figure I get enough of a challenge keeping 4 kids alive and reading is my escape mechanism so when my brother was telling me that I HAD to read Zelazny, I put it on my wishlist and out of my mind until we were both at our dad's house and this book was on the shelf that my dad
I enjoyed the Chronicles of Amber and was hoping to like this one as well. The book was slow-paced, more talk and reflection than action. Francis Sandow, a near-immortal and a world creator, must leave the planet where he has created a sanctuary for himself when an unknown enemy sends him mysterious messages regarding people from his past.As Francis travels to a world he created, which his enemy has now taken over, he reflects on his existence and the process of world-building. It took me a while to get into this story, the quality of the audio tape recording wasn't very good, but once I was in, it was rather speedily flowing story (as all of Zelazny's books, come to think of that...).So if you like him, you'll like this one too. It's old, but nonetheless interestingly developing story spiced with witty comments ;)
